Implementing Evidence-Based Practices in North Carolina

Speakers include:

Arthur C. Evans Jr., Ph.D., Commissioner, Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services has expertise implementing evidence-based practices in public systems.  He is leading a major initiative to transform how behavioral health care and intellectual disability services are delivered in the city. Since Dr. Evans’ appointment in November 2004, Philadelphia has begun a transformation of its system to one that focuses on recovery for adults, resilience for children, and self-determination for all people with intellectual disabilities.

Cheryl Sharp, MSW is the Special Advisor for Trauma Informed Services at the National Council for Behavioral Health.  She holds the unique perspective of a person with lived experience both as a family member and as an ex-consumer of services as well as a provider of services. She is an Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator, a Mental Health First Aid Trainer® and a trainer of Intentional Peer Support. She is also President of the Maryland Association of Peer Support Specialists and co-author of its training curriculum.

In addition, two examples of EBP implementation in North Carolina will be discussed.  The Robeson County Bridges for Families Program will discuss their experiences in implementing the Matrix Model, Seeking Safety, the Strengthening Families Program, and Family Drug Treatment Court.  The NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services and the Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina School of Medicine will present on fidelity monitoring of the Assertive Community Treatment model in the State.
